On June 30th, 2012, Spectra Technical designed and ran lighting and sound for the Ryan Celebration Talent Show. Many talented individuals came out and performed, and after Precision Pyro put on a great fireworks display! Spectra was on hand to provide the sound for the fireworks show.

Denise’s Dance Studio Presents: Music That Moves You

The Hanson Auditorium in Manchester, IA is a beautiful venue. This is the first event we worked for Denise of Denise’s Dance Studio, and we helped make it a show people talked about and remembered. University of Iowa Veterans Association Warrior Challenge

On Saturday, March 31st, Club Spectra had a chance to DJ for a truly good cause. There are few honors as great as being a veteran, and when we were offered the chance to DJ for a race honoring Vets, we jumped on it. Spectra Technical donated our services for a fun morning of racing in Iowa City. The UIVA Warrior Challenge took place at the Hawkeye Recreation Fields. It featured a weighted 5K run and a team challenge consisting of an obstacle course. Proceeds from the race were donated to the University of Iowa Veterans Association, as well as the Wounded Warrior Project.

Thanks to everyone who helped out that chilly morning. Hopefully this race becomes an annual thing. What an amazing cause, and what a great race!

West Delaware High School’s Red Carpet Gala Show Choir Competition

Show choir is a really fun thing to light, and the show choirs that competed at the West Delaware Red Carpet Gala in Manchester did not let anyone down. West Delaware is a high school that understands the importance of great lighting and sound, and its always a pleasure to work with the great crews they have. The Red Carpet Gala is a little different from most show choir competitions. Generally a show choir shows up and performs on a stage with very basic lighting. Not at West Delaware. While working for the Red Carpet Gala, we were asked to light a choir based on the mood they were portraying with the music and the costumes. We were given artistic license, and it really paid off. There are few things as cool as having a chance to really go all out, and that is something West Delaware is known for. Congratulations to all the choirs who came out and performed; you looked and sounded great!

University of Iowa Spring Break Rave

On March 8th, 2012, Club Spectra spun decks for the University of Iowa’s Late Night Program, designed to bring activities and unique events to students in the residence halls. We pulled out all the stops, providing full sound and lighting with our mobile rig.

Sunday, March 4th, came and went with our most technically challenging show yet. This was the final show for the show choirs at West High, and we wanted to wow the crowds with something new. A show that was impressive at 76 cues (changes in light scene), became truly spectacular at 500. Between both the Good Time Company and Showtime, over 1500 cues were run. This show took over 40 hours to plan, and 80 to hang/program, but it was an experience that was amazing to behold. Every part of the show became my favorite, because everyone on stage was working in concert with one another to create something bigger than any one of them. From the strong beginning to the beautiful ballad to the very end, where the singers stood silhouetted against a sunset. It was an honor to work with the award winning show choirs, and the directors, who put in many more hours building such an incredible program than many will ever know or understand. The dedication Ryan Person and Mary Kay Knapp show to their choirs is evident to all, and it was great to work with such a great team this year. Thank you Ryan and Mary Kay, for the opportunity you gave to us to grow and learn and do things we couldn’t do for anyone else. Thank you for letting us work so closely to your choirs to produce not just a show, but an experience. We learned a lot through this season working with you, and every show we do from here on out will undoubtedly have some element we learned from this show series. Thank you Jacob and Roisin, for without you two, none of this would ever be possible. Hats off to an amazing year! We hope to work with you again.

Spectra Technical designed and ran lighting for the Swing into Spring show in the West High Auditorium on Sunday, March 4th, 2012. We also brought in our mobile sound system (with a little help from Ken Duncan, who helped fill in the parts we were using elsewhere) and mixed sound for the Desert Show in the Cafeteria, which ran between the two main-stage show choir shows.

West High Choirs Awards Banquet

February 28th brought a fun night for the students involved in the show choirs at West. The directors opted to have an awards night on a different date than the Swing into Spring shows, as it allowed a more enjoyable experience for patrons who came to watch the shows, and for the students who were recognized. A small group of parents planned the night, which included a potluck dinner in the cafeteria and an awards slideshow in the auditorium. We provided our mobile sound system in the cafeteria and played ambiance, then ran a public address system in the auditorium. It was a successful night, and we wish the graduating seniors in West High’s show choirs good luck as they go forward with college plans. Hopefully the arts will be a part of them!
